When it’s time to decide what window furnishings you want for your home, it can seem there are almost endless choices. In this article, we’ll compare two of the most popular options, Roman and roller blinds. Both of these options cover the window in one straight blind and tend to be controlled with a thin chain, usually made of heavy-duty plastic, but there is more than one difference between Roman blinds and roller blinds in Australia.
Roman coverings have been popular for hundreds of years as their pleated look when rolled up creates a classic look that most people love. Battens are inserted into the blind at regular intervals so when the blind is pulled up with a cord, the blind folds in sections creating the delicate pleats. While previously made of heavy fabric attached to a separate lining, they can now be made with almost anything from coated fabrics to translucent options to let plenty of light in. When it comes to Roman blinds pros and cons, the main pro is that they provide great insulation as well as style. This helps reduce the heat lost through your windows and therefore reduces your energy costs. The main disadvantage of them is that they can be hard to clean because of the heavy fabric typically used. Other materials now used are easier to clean though and treatments can be applied that help reduce dirt buildup.
Roller blinds are one length of fabric, typically lighter fabrics than Roman coverings, that roll up almost entirely around a tube at the top of the window. There are a wide variety of fabric choices that will come up if you look for roller blinds images so they can suit all spaces and styles. You can also choose scalloped edges to add some flair. The main benefit of roller blinds is that they are compact so save space and can fit on windows of all sizes. The main drawback is that over time wrinkles can appear in the fabric as it’s common for it to not roll up evenly every time.
Roman blinds tend to be easily recognisable due to their pleats, but roller blinds can sometimes be confused with other blind styles. Roller blinds vs zebra blinds for example differ in their fabrics. Roller blinds use a single piece of fabric while zebra blinds use two types that alternate in stripes with the darker fabric blocking light while the transparent fabric lets it through, offering a combination of light and privacy. Roller blinds vs Venetian blinds differ in their operation. A roller is rolled up and down as one piece whereas Venetians have slats that are opened and closed and can be angled.
When it comes to choosing blinds, most people want to know which blinds work in each room. For example, when it comes to picking Roman or roller blinds for the kitchen, you’re likely to be best to go with a roller blind. Moisture can build up in the pleats of a Roman blind leading to mould or damage. Rollers on the other hand don’t have those folds to trap moisture and they’re easily wiped down or cleaned. The same logic applies to the bathroom, but many people prefer Romans for living areas and bedrooms for the luxury touch they provide.
Are Roman or Roller Blinds Better for Blackout?
As we’ve discussed already, there are several differences between the two styles of blinds. If you need complete darkness to sleep, the most important difference for you is which is best for blackout purposes. Typically, Roman blinds are the better choice for blocking out light and keeping you sleeping soundly as they’re made from a heavier material and have a good fit to the window. Roller blinds don’t fit as snugly so there is the potential for some light to creep around the edges of the blind. There are now dual roller blinds though which are more effective at blocking out light. These blinds incorporate two rollers in one. This makes them heavier and therefore better at blackout. You can also choose to have one of the blinds made of blackout material for an extra boost. This means when choosing Roman or roller blinds for the bedroom, it would be best to go for the heavier material options and ask the sales team of the company you choose which option will fit flush to your window frames to prevent light around the sides.
What is the Difference Between Roman Blind and Roller Blind in Cost?
You won’t be able to get an exact price for your blind without providing details such as the measurement of your windows, what kind of material you want your blinds made of, and whether you want manual or motorised openings. In general, though, Roman window coverings will cost a bit more because of the materials used and the extra time required to make them with the battens that create the pleating. Romans do tend to last longer than rollers though so over time there won’t be a large difference in cost.
